Pubic lice also called crabs are basically tiny insects that live in the coarse hair such as the pubic hair. What do they look like? They are basically in three forms- Nits are the lice eggs. They are usually yellow or white in color and are hard to see as they are attached to the hair shaft. They usually take 6-10 days to hatch. Nymph is what hatches from the nit and takes about 2-3 weeks to mature and feeds on the blood. The adult pubic lice resemble a miniature crab when viewed through a strong magnifying glass. Pubic lice have six legs; their two front legs are very large and look like the pincher claws of a crab. This is how they got the nickname “crabs.” Pubic lice are tan to grayish-white in color. Females lay nits and are usually larger than males. To live, lice must feed on blood. If the louse falls off a person, it dies within 1–2 days.
